Recently John Hattie published a new professional text titled Visible Learning Feedback. The content of the book is to provide ways to educators to give timely, specific feedback to all students in ways that have been proven to show the most student achievement growth and impact. I have just embarked on reading the text, but wanted to share a few key takeaways so far....
1. The key to providing feedback is to allow the student to have a clear visions of the next steps they may take in their learning path. Feedback should not be used for commenting on where they already are learning or show how to do the right process of learning. Feedback should be held for clarifying learning steps and providing a clear vision for the student.
2. Feedback should fill the gap between what is understood and what is aimed to be understood.
3. the greatest motivational benefits will come from focusing feedback on: qualities of the child's work not the comparison with others, specific ways the child can improve during the next steps in learning, and comparing a child's work to their own previous work.
4. Students need to be explicitly taught on how to receive, interpret and use the feedback they are provided.
5. Students need to shift out of their comfort zone while learning and push toward the challenge zone to see next steps in learning.

SIP Goals with Data Collection Points
Thank you to all who took the time to complete the pre data collection for the two SIP goals for this year. We are excited about the ability to really hit hard learner profile and proficiency based progress. We did see a large regression in the ability of students to identify the learner profile, the intent of the profile and how they would utilize it to advocate for themselves. February 2018 data indicated 56% at level 2 or 3 on learner profile and currently only 29.8% are at level 2 and 3. Our SIP goal is based on the improvement from February 2018 data, so we have some work to do to internalize the learner profile for the students.
The following are the final breakdowns with data add for the student growth goals:
Learner Profile Data Levels:
Needs Improvement:
-Overall increase of 10% to 19% observed at levels 2 and 3, 66% to 75% in level 2 and 3 (shift 743 to 845 students)
Proficient:
-Overall increase of 20% to 30% observed at levels 2 and 3, 76% to 86% in level 2 and 3 (shift 856 students to 969 students)
Distinguished:
-An overall increase of 31% or more observed at levels 2 and 3, 87% or above (shift 979 or more students)
Proficiency Based Progress Data Levels:

Staff and Student Advisory Group for One to One Learning
This fall we will be forming a few one to one learning advisory groups to review and plan for possible one to one learning implementation. These advisory groups will spend time this fall and winter beginning to plan and prepare for logistics of adding a Chromebook for every student 4th through 12th grade. The teams will build the procedures for care of the Chromebooks, dissemination of the devices, learning plans, and much more. If you have an interest in becoming part of the advisory group please complete this short google form to begin the process of serving on the group. Staff One to One Learning Advisory Group
If you have a student that you believe would be a great resource to assist in implementation please email Mike Rice and Sarah Mumm the name and grade level. We are looking for students from every grade span in order to make the best plans and decisions.
The advisory groups will begin to meet in later October so please complete the form and nominate a student by October 10th.

1st through 5th Grade Progress Reports
Thank you all for your patience while we competed and fixed the trimester progress reports. A HUGE thank you to Gail P. at KSS for assisting in this process. The final link for the progress report template was sent to all staff through the Principals this past week. The progress report is an excel template, not on google this year. Please be sure to save and make your own copy with your last name in the title. Remember each student should get a progress report for the first trimester.
PL 2.0 Reflection
So here we are over a month into the school year! Boy time has been flying by! We want to take this moment and share the excitement in the conversations that have been shared and the planning that has been taking place within this first month. While in the schools, it has been noted the level of conversations around proficiency based progress and the learner profile. We are excited to continue the conversation. Please take a moment to self-reflect on the learning that took place on August at Personalized Learning 2.0 and consider questions, thoughts, and further areas of learning. Please take a moment to share your thoughts and questions with us by posting a comment to this article. We will be checking back and seeing how we can continue to support all of you in the progression of proficiency based progress. Thank you all for a great start to the year!
