Learning Forward Academy

Learning Forward is an international organization focused on professional learning standards within educational settings, and on building the capacity necessary to equitably serve all students. We are excited to announce that three Kaneland administrators will be participating in the 2 1/2-year Learning Forward Academy Cohort. James Horne, Brian Zerfas, and Jay Bodine will be joining educators from across the world as they work with expert coaches and practitioners to construct knowledge, improve practice, and create improved learning conditions for students and staff. Thank you to these administrators for their commitment to continuous learning.

Learner Profile Student Reflection

Kaneland has implemented the use of a Learner Profile at all levels. The document takes different forms across the grade spans, with some consisting of reflections housed in a binder, a compilation of slides within a Google presentation, a Google Site (called Knight Site), and others incorporated into the Xelllo Storyboard feature. Regardless of the format, the Learner Profile is intended to empower students as they reflect on and advocate for their unique learning needs and preferences.

A KBK 5th Grader was asked, "How Does Your Learner Profile Help You?" Listen to the short video below, as she describes how understanding her learning needs supports her ability to set goals for herself as a learner.

 Proficiency Tables to Increase Clarity

Proficiency tables detail exactly what learning looks and sounds like at various stages of proficiency for a given standard. Additionally, they help learners to reflect on and gauge their own progress within a reported standard, as well as to identify their next steps in learning.

42 staff members have completed the requirements within PL 3.0 submissions for Proficiency Tables to Increase Clarity. Some submitted examples include:

-Student self-assessment and goal setting using a Proficiency Table
-Incorporating Proficiency Tables within Feedback Cycles
-Student identification of evidence of proficient indicators within writing samples
-Student advocacy for additional learning and re-assessment opportunities based on the identification of their own learning gaps, as identified through a review of proficient indicators
