6-12 SBG Transition Update

I just wanted to keep everyone updated on the last few steps of the transition planning for SBG to traditional grading. We have our Kaneland Connects Commitment team meeting next week, which will be the final data collection from the community stakeholders. We will then bring an updated protocol to both grade spans for final review and adjustments. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Revisiting Tenet B

 Growth Mindset

We are getting into arguably one of the more difficult portions of the year - the month of February. Between weather, lack of sun, and cold temps, it can be a struggle to actively engage students during this time. This is a great time to revisit the growth mindset concept with your students and share ways in which they can persevere through this period. That might be video discussions, SEL/homeroom talks, conferencing, etc. The important thing to remember is connection - not just a poster hanging in the room, but true connections to your students to keep them motivated!

Canvas/Google Doc Reminder (recurring post)

For the last few years, Canvas has stopped supporting Google Docs Cloud Assignments and has advised users to switch to Google Assignments. It is now official that Google Docs Cloud Assignments will be deprecated. Please use the Google Assignments external tool instead. HERE is a guide.

SIP Kaneland Connects SIP Goal Post Assessment

It is that time of year again to have our students reflect on the commitments in Kaneland Connects and progress of each one.  This is part of our evaluative student growth goals.  Please take time between January 26 and February 2nd to have your students take the assessment linked below.  Grades 2-12 will also be sent directly to students through School Messenger but also please draw attention to taking the survey in your class periods.  All EC-1 (and it is an option for 2nd grade) should print the survey linked below and give the survey to all during next week.  All printed surveys need to be returned to Sarah Mumm by Friday at 4:00pm. Please contact the Educational Service Department at any time with questions.

Writing Status of the Class and Sharing in Writer's Workshop Examples

Based on the writing audits, making sure that we implement a status of the class process as part of writer's workshop is essential and an area we all can work on.  Our writing consultant has shared these resources for all staff to gain more insight on how to begin to set up the status of the class process and create opportunities for sharing. Please see the following resources shared to assist in reflecting on your practices and implementing these as part of the non-negotiables for writer's workshop.

Summer School

We are very excited to share that summer school this year will be held in July!  We are hoping this will assist in the reduction of summer learning slide for our students and allow for early high school credit for students.  This upcoming BOE meeting we will be sharing the revisions to structures and fees.  Please take a moment to review this presentation to learn more about summer school! Please feel free to contact Kara Salto (K-5) and Brock Feece (6-12) with any questions.

Learning Forward Sharing

This past month 9 staff members attended the annual Learning Forward Conference in Washington DC.  This upcoming BOE meeting the team will be sharing just a small bit of their learning from the 3 day event.  Please take a moment to review and learn some of the amazing learning and sessions that were attended during the conference.  Learning Forward Summary

Educator Advisory Council

On January 22nd EAC met for their monthly meeting.  The following were topics discussed:

  • The team took time to review the options for Rigby assessment structures and explore further options for the future.  Multiple subgroups created possible options that might meet the needs of all and presented them.  These options will then be shared with MTSS Coordinators and brought back for a final discussion at EAC next month. The goal is to collect data effectively in order to guide instruction and monitor overall progress, while still keeping as much Teacher to Student instructional time as possible.

  •  The team reviewed the feedback on word study.  The committee is in agreement that the kindergarten team should address this as a district wide team.

  • The committee reviewed the Kaneland Connects feedback that will be shared with the committee on January 30th.

  • The committee took time to acknowledge the celebrations shared from our staff. They will also be shared in the blog.

  • The committee shared various responses to the Writing PD plan. We shared ideas and questions for clarification. Sarah and Anne will meet to discuss next steps.
