R.E.V. Update

Our district’s R.E.V. (Respect, Equity, Value) core team has been exploring ways we can ensure that these three core tenets are foundational for every Kaneland student's educational experience. To support this effort, we engaged with an organization, the Consortium for Educational Change (CEC), to conduct an Equity Audit. The purpose of the Audit was to assess the degree to which each and every student has access to meaningful learning opportunities and support so they are successful in the classroom and in their future. The R.E.V. team would like to dig a little deeper into some of the responses, and will be sharing a follow up survey for students, staff and families early in the Fall. The results of the Audit and follow up survey will be shared with the district and each school community in the Fall, and will lead to ensuring that Kaneland CUSD #302 provides a respectful and equitable learning environment.

SBG Commitment Team Joint Statement

The standards-based grading Commitment Team met for the final time on May 12th. The following items were discussed:

-The action items from this school year were discussed and data collection information was shared. It was deemed that the District is proficient in the following action items based on learning walks throughout the year:

-Staff can utilize a collaborative process to identify reported standards for selected content areas

-Staff can identify and pilot how to implement grading levels and grade conversion into their content area (identified courses)

-Staff can explore the retake process for their content area

The following areas were deemed as "Approaching Proficient" based on data collected:

-Students can identify the differences and importance in the types of tasks (formatives, summatives, homework, practice activities)

-Staff can model questions for students to ask during self-reflection and self-assessing

-Staff can recognize and implement the feedback process

-Staff can articulate to students the process, benefits, and importance of standards-based grading

The team discussed the 2022-2023 goals for SBG:

-Staff can implement grade conversion and levels of grading into their content area (identified courses)

-Staff can collaborate to create assessment tools that are assignment specific and reflect proficiency table expectations

-Staff can host question and answer sessions regarding grading practices with students

-Staff can implement the retake process for their content area

-Staff can articulate connections for proficiency tables including, but not limited to, standards-based grading

-Community can identify the purpose and process of standards-based grading

We emphasized the need for more explicit language linking the practices of standards-based grading to what is happening in the classroom (i.e. feedback cycles, practice, formatives, etc), the need for common language EC-12 for our parents, and the need to create an FAQ document to help staff host question and answer sessions for grading with students.

The team will be in the "Approaching Phase" for the 2022-2023 school year and will meet 4 times throughout.

May Star Search Winner!

Congratulations to
Deb Martenson, as the May Star Search Winner!! Deb was nominated by Cindy Campise for...

"Deb has been a dedicated teacher for 30+ years and is retiring strong with her continued commitment to her student's success in Science. She has touched many lives over the years. To date, students still stop by to visit their favorite 7th grade, Science teacher. Her students have ALWAYS come first. She uses whatever time she has available to ensure her students display a good work ethic. I admire Deb and all she does for her students. She truly goes the extra mile for everyone she knows!"

 AND by Gina Mitchell for...

"Deb is amazing! She took me under her wing when I began teaching at Harter in 2015. She taught me all of the ins and outs of teaching Science. Her willingness to accommodate all students is amazing. She is always understanding of each of her students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs. Her retirement this year is well-deserved, BUT we are truly going to miss her. Thank you for all you have done over the years, Deb! I could not have gotten through the last 7 years without you."

Deb, your Kaneland Box 'o Fun is on its way! Congratulations to you, and all of our wonderful 2022 retirees! You will be missed!

Have a Great Summer!

Thank you for all of your hard work this year! We hope you each have time this summer to rest, relax, and rejuvenate, by doing whatever it is that makes you smile! We can't wait to hear about everyone's adventures. For those participating in summer PD sessions, we look forward to seeing you and learning together.
