Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year

We'd like to officially welcome everyone back to the 2019-2020 school year! It has been an eventful summer in our Kaneland community, hopefully, over the past couple of months, you have had the opportunity to relax, reset, and reflect on the past year. Once again, our Educational Services Department will be maintaining a weekly blog for you to use as a resource for information on what we are doing as a department but more importantly, WHY we are doing it! Look for updates to come (almost) every Tuesday as you get settled in for your week. Remember that you can search past blog posts using the search feature (by title, key word, date). Be sure to subscribe with your email for the most up-to-date postings!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 12th! We've got an exciting day of activities and learning planned for everyone!

Content Mins. Required K-5

As we all begin our back to school routine we set schedules for our classrooms.  Recently there has been a shift in the requirement by the State of Illinois for content area minutes.  There are no longer specific total minutes for the content area.  For this year you will need to continue to submit your classroom schedule to your building Administration, but there is not need to calculate and total the specific time per content this year.  Although there is no state specific requirement, there is always a need to balance time on content based on the I can statements in the content area.  If you have any questions at all please feel free to just ask.

Welcome Back Thoughts to Ponder

This week we were lucky enough to attend a conference and listen to Dr. Anthony Muhammad.  The day was filled with affirmation of the great work that all of you have been doing over the course of the past years, as well as a few next steps to assist in building our healthy and accountable school culture.  During the session he posed the following as three of the greatest impacts and advantages for students learning:

1. Teacher Collective Efficacy:  The number one greatest impact to student learning achievement as documented by over 15 years of research, is collective efficacy.  The mindset that you are a team to support all students.  The belief you are responsible for all, not just those assigned to you.  The belief you are an advocate for all students AND your peers.
2.  Teacher Estimates of Student Achievement: Researcher John Hattie found that this is the second most impactful thing for students to achieve.  The concept that teachers have the mindset and preconceived notions that all students can and will achieve, students will gain a year and a half growth in a year just from the mindset!   We challenge you as you begin to look at your class lists and rosters to maintain the mindset that all students will be successful and throw any negative preconceived notions out the window.  Every child is different and everyone can achieve.
3.  Student Self Efficacy:  The third highest impact on learning is the student's own perception of their ability.

Consider these three major impacts on learning as you prepare to meet students in one week!  We are excited to begin a great school year!

K-5 Writing Reminder

Welcome back!  This year we are very excited to begin our Units of Study Writing implementation.  Please remember you are asked to utilize the Writing Units of Study tools until you have self reflected and held a collaborative reflection using the proficiency tables for writing planning and delivery (links below).   It is important to note that if you are piloting new ELA materials that may include writing, the writing portions are not to be used during the pilot.  Although Houghton Mifflin was gracious enough to include writing, those writing materials are not to be used during the pilot.  Please remember our team determined to use Units of Study this year.
