In a recent essay published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Jonathan Zimmerman called the Coronavirus outbreak a natural experiment, encouraging the initiation of research into the effectiveness of online learning during these challenging times. Others challenged this call, citing the abrupt shift to a new instructional format and inadequate time to thoroughly train and support educators, as not being representative of online instruction as a whole.
