This past month the Instructional Coach and MTSS Coordinator teams at K-5 met to continue the Crucial Conversation book study. This month we discussed the concept of how we respond to difficult situations. We took time to share and reflection on when staff or ourselves have a silence or violence reaction to tough discussions. The book shared an under stress assessment survey that anyone can take to reveal possible reactions you have to situations. The discussion shared revolved around how to identify when a staff member is being silent under stress or how we can support a "violent" as the book calls it response. We all discussed how we can support staff through the process of breaking down the root cause of an emotional response under stress rather than taking it personally. Another key statement from the book study was the concept of safety not being synonymous with comfort in conversation. As a team we are looking at the option of offering a Crucial Conversations book study this summer or next fall. If you would have an interest in participating in this type of book study in the future, please contact Sarah Mumm to share your interest as well.
